The “Ladau Family Sefer Torah Project” is a unique and unusual project, which aims to unify as many people as possible in writing a Sefer Torah (Torah scroll). It is being done in honor of the unity of the Jewish people and the love for a fellow Jew. This Sefer Torah, which is being written in Jerusalem, in the Arnona (Talpiyot) neighborhood, combines in deed a triple act of unity and solidarity: a unifying mitzvah in a unifying city and within a unified neighborhood and community.
The mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah is special and rare, and contains the great virtue of peace and unity. ״The entire Torah was given in order to make peace in the world” (Maimonides, laws of Megillah and Chanukah, 14, 4); The Torah provides us with meaning, purpose and with godly spiritual values, and thus brings peace between body and soul, the physical and the spiritual, heaven and earth, between man and himself and between man and the world around him.
Our sages teach that the acronym of the very word “Israel” (“Yisrael” in Hebrew) is “Yesh (there are) Shishim Ribo (600,000) Otiyot (letters) L’torah (in the Torah)” corresponding to the part which every Jewish man and woman has in the holy Torah. The connection between Sefer Torah and the Jewish people is also reflected in the fact that just like a Sefer Torah cannot be kosher and ready to use if even one single letter is missing or defected, so too the Jewish people cannot be complete and perfect if even one Jewish soul is absent or lost from our people.
In our time, not everyone has the ability or the resources necessary to fulfil the mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah. “The Ladau Family Sefer Torah Project” is a great opportunity for all to participate in the fulfillment of this mitzvah by purchasing a part, even one letter, in this special Sefer Torah.
More about Sefer Torah, and also about our Sofer (Torah scroll writer), you can read here:
The Torah is being written in the holy city of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is, and has always been, a symbol of peace and unity, the city that connects us all. The united city of Jerusalem is a replica of the beating heart and soul of the Jewish people, a place where each and every one of us feels that we belong.
Since 1967, when the city was reunited during the six day war, the Kotel and the Old City are once again under Jewish sovereignty, a sovereignty that allows every man and woman, without any limitations or discrimination, to reach the holy sites, and connect to those places which are symbols of life and connection with the all-mighty.
There is no better nor more suitable place to write a Sefer Torah than our city of Jerusalem. “For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem” (Isaiah 2, 3)
In Jerusalem, this Sefer Torah is being written in the Arnona neighborhood, in our community – “H’aavat Israel” – Chabad. In the five years since its establishment, our community has demonstrated and implemented the words of the verse (Isaiah, 41, 6): “they help each other and say to their companion be strong!” The wonderful people, men and women and families that make up our community, come from different backgrounds with different perspectives on life, from all corners of the globe; from the US and France, Tunisia and Holland, people who were born in Israel and new immigrants, who together compose a beautiful human mosaic of one special, vibrant and dynamic community – H’aavat Israel, Chabad Arnona – a community that is always there to help one another.
The Ladau family, one of the pillars of our community, wishes to use the writing of their Sefer Torah to encourage greater good deeds, charity and kindness and dedicates it to the love and unity of the Jewish people. Therefore, everyone who wants to participate in the magnificent mitzvah of writing a new Sefer Torah in Jerusalem has the opportunity to purchase a part, a chapter, an Aliya, a pasuk or even one letter in this special Torah.
The funds raised from this mitzvah will be used to perform further mitzvot (good deeds) for the benefit of the community and the neighborhood, and to help the establishment and expansion of our community.
There’s no greater joy than the joy of the Torah – a new Torah in a Jerusalem community which is all about “H’aavat Israel”, love acceptance and support of one another.
Come and partner with us in this special mitzvah and special project: “The Ladau family Sefer Torah”.
